Grimlock & Swoop - Energon - Figures

OK, My First Review, so here it goes...

Grimlock and Swoop, Keeping their G1 names and forms, (Which I think is a first for the Energon line.) come as a 2 pack running around $20, or Ultra range. yet both are $10, or deluxe size, so no major sale deal there. I'm reviewing 2 transformers, so may seem a little long

Starting with Grimlock. comes in Beast Mode so start with beast mode. staying true to G1, Grimlock is still a T-Rex, with his Main color gray, which covers his body, tail, hips, and head. A lighter gray, for the arms and claws. Yellow, which covers the neck, tail tip, and top of head. Red, which accents the hips, legs, eyes, and Autobot Symbol on tip of head. and black, which also accents the legs. compared to G1, Energon Grimlock is by far an improvement. the overall body shape is much more realistic, or accurate. he kind of reminds me of the dinosaur in the move Toy Story. The head is more T-rex shaped, jaw opens and head nods up and down and moves very smooth but not loose. arms are placed on bottom of neck and resemble real T-Rex arms and claws, with 2 claws per arm and only bending at the shoulder. BIG improvement over G1 Grimlock with elbows sticking out and poor movement. Legs are more stable and are a decent size this time around. For the beast mode alone, he would have gotten a 10. but like many others where one mode is Great, the other......isn't

First thing about Grimlock's robot mode. it pays max respect to G1 in many ways. first thing, Tail transforms into legs same as G1, split the tip, fold legs down from hips. legs are very stable and bend at knees very well. hips bend as well, can't really split the legs, but, probably best they didn't. T-Rex legs become Robot arms pretty much in the same manner as G1, only the hands push out instead of feet pushed up. The arms, are, well, dumb. yeah they are fully posable, tight, all good qualities. but if you move the arms out, it looks more like they are coming out his hips. moving on, the neck snaps and folds over the back with t-rex head to show the robot head. which is an excellent remake of G1, Black with red eyes. rotates 360 degrees and tight but smooth twist. Now with the neck and Dino head over the back, kind of looks like a backpack. Main body is colored yellow with not much color change. Overall Energon Grimlock is a great improvement over G1. would be better if arms and "backpack" issues were fixed.

Now to Swoop. (so you know, I can't spell his beast form, so I’ll refer to it as Dino Bird, plus if you spell it right, it looks misspelled anyway, also, I don't have my G1 Swoop out to compare it too, had to locked them up when my Son learned to crawl and he likes Transformers like his daddy, I thought it was cute till he started playing with them, learned my lesson and bought him his own. G1 Swoop Survived Unicron and the Great War, but couldn't Survive the Toddler.) Well, Swoop is same form as G1, he has sharp, blade-like wings, and twin Jumbo jet engines on his back. wings, head, and back are light gray. engines are Back with Yellow Accent, and body and legs are black with blue Accents. Mouth opens as well. Overall, Excellent Beast Mode, with no doubt it's definitely Swoop.

Now, to robot Mode, Engines fold down to become Legs, which bends at the knees very well and Ball Joint Hips which bend well, Kind of hinder from bending forward a little by socket covers, but can't complain, Dino bird head folds down to robot Chest, exposing robot head. head plays well to G1 Swoop to the best of my memory. (son is walking now, BTW, so been a while since I’ve had G1 Swoop.) his head doesn't turn much at all which is kind of disappointing, but easy to forgive, Dino bird side body panels flip up to become robot shoulder plates, Dino Bird legs swing up and become robot arms. Arms are WAY better than Grimlock’s. only downside is they don't latch or click into anything to keep them in place, Joints are tight, but try to move the arms and it's like pulling his arms out of his sockets. Wings are not moved and stay on the back, are posable to give him a "robot flight mode". Wings are connected by Ball Joints and can move in any Direction, plus they bend at the elbows for a Folded wing look. colors and placement pretty much stay the same. just a little more blue on the body. Overall, Swoop's Robot Mode is far better than Grimlock's, yet Grimlock's Beast Mode is Better than Swoop's, but not by much

Now, the reason they are a 2-Pack. Plus the reason they shouldn't be a 2-Pack. Both Grimlock and Swoop Powerlinx to form MEGA DINOBOT. Grimlock Forming the torso and Swoop the legs, this is by far the worse powerlinks combiner I have ever seen, pics look decent, but it really isn't . Swoop all you do is, From Robot Mode, split the body in half and fold the arms down next to the legs, and with Grimlock, from Beast Mode, you split him down the middle and spread the halves out so they look like big shoulder plates, (arms still dumb looking.) and you fold the T-Rex head down and flip up Mega Dinobots head. Not to mention Mega Dinobot has NO neck at all, head just floating there. then you flip Grimlock's chest piece down and it connects to Swoops head. Simple, but dumb and dorky looking. completely unstable, have to hold both pieces to move with otherwise Grimlock just falls off, also Swoops wings flip up onto Grimlock, Figure to be wings but there not, they are there to help connect the two together, and doesn't help. Forgive me for no Pics. transformer Web site does have their pics in their Bios, which is written as a combined Bio . which is kind of sad as well so there's my review and here is my score break down:

Grimlock beast 10/10 robot 6/10
Swoop beast 8/10 robot 8/10
