Hi. OK, long time lurker, first time poster, and I have to play the geek card. Sorry.
This has been grating on my nerves for days: There is no place called "White Sands, New Mexico". It does not exist. I have lived here for 32 years (and no, I am not exactly proud of that), and can assure you that I have a pretty good handle on the terrain, including place names.
Don't know if the movie folks gave this to the newsies just to blurr the issue of where they are filming, but I am seeing it everywhere, and it is incorrect.
There are two places with "White Sands" in the name here in southern New Mexico, and I can only verify that filming has occured in one of them. The first is "White Sands Missile Range", AKA WSMR, a large--well--US Army installation and RANGE that is primarily used for testing long range weapons systems, such as the Patriot Missile and its mods/upgrades. White Sands Missile Range also hosts a small US Navy presence (yes, in the middle of the desert), and is the site of the USS Desert Ship. You folks who care can verify all this with Google and Wikipedia. The only filming I am personally aware of having been done has been on WSMR. I DO NOT pretend to have any inside or other information regarding the film, however. Primarily because I am not a fan of the film series and do not frankly care.
I can tell you that you will be seeing some mobile missile launchers that I have the privilege of seeing up close on a regular basis in the film in some capacity, though I know absolutely no other details on that.
The second place called White Sands is the fairly well-known "White Sands National Monument", AKA WSNM, and it is possible that acronym confused some folks. White Sands is a national park, not a city, and does not even have its own mailing address (search it on the National Park Services website at NPS.org and it comes up as a PO Box on Holloman Air Force Base, host of the Nighthawk Stealth Fighter during the 1990s and, as of this summer, the F-22 Raptor, and neighbor to Alamogordo, NM, which in its turn is most famous for its space museum and the crazy people who burn Harry Potter and other "questionable" books for Christmas. No, sadly, not kidding.) White Sands National Monument is best known for its literally white gypsum sands, and has been used by such films as Tank Girl and many others.
You can read more about all of these places on Wikipedia; the articles are all fairly accurate, though we who work on White Sands Missile Range have NOT dropped any missiles on White Sands National Monument...
...um...recently. *cough*
