First Looks at TakaraTomy Masterpiece MP-10 Convoy and Human Driver

We have certainly heard quite a bit about TakaraTomy's upcoming Masterpiece MP-10 Convoy Ver 2.0 figure, but we finally get a look at the figure and its human driver.

Courtesy of the famitoy blog, we have views of the figure and the scale of the figure, as compared with MP-09 Rodimus Convoy (recently announced to get a re-release of its own).

The images are watermarked with Hasbro, even though TakaraTomy is releasing the figure. This gives us the (hopeful) thinking that it will eventually hit stateside as well.

The images also show off the human driver, looking very much like Generation 1 era Spike Witwicky.

Convoy features some rather interesting features, including:
  • A full trailer with a base mode and Roller
  • Convoy's blaster may be folded and stored in his backside, allowing you to no longer lose that loose piece
  • The figure transforms in one touch
  • The figure is slated for a September 2011 release and is priced at 22,000 Yen (~$273 USD).

Hmmm... wonder if they ocnsidered just starting a "NEW LINE" if all they wanted to do was change the scale. You know, like ending Binaltech for Alternity line???

I'm sorry - i'm sick of the repaints. But even if they were going to do this - seems more to me, it should have been an MP-01x - and not a completely different number MP-10.

I agree completely; putting a new but slightly different version of G1 Prime in a limited line, which has already had that character, is a dumb move. "We could give you loyal collectors a MP Galvatron, or a MP Soundwave or Blitzwing or Arcee or Skyfire etc... but no, we're gonna do over Optimus Prime again for ya". Gee thanks. It's doubly frustrating because the MP figures are so few and far between as it is.

If it were a 'G1 Human Alliance line' though, I wouldn't have minded one bit.

That's what i'm saying.. I mean the line is how many YEARS old and it only has 10 figuers - of which 4 of them (40%) are now all prime (mp-01, 02, 04, and now 10). For crysts sake! And that's before you even get into the sleeping version, final version, black version. It's just BEYOND overdone. And after they do a "FINAL" version and you think they can't do it again - they change the "SCALE?" As a person that is heavily invested (loyally and financially) and loves this line - it really pisses me off - because it is marking the end for me. I'm no longer a completist, I will no longer purchase multiples of a piece (which iv'e done on a few of them), and it simply pains me to have them screw it up this bad. Oh well - a tad more venting - and i'll get to "acceptance" in my 7 step process - and finally be done with it and at peace about it. Outside of a new MP mold - looks like my TF collecting has come to an end. Which is sad, because if they would have handled this difference (and the movie line as well) I would have sunk many more $1000's into them easily. Oh well - more money saved to go out with.

I think using the tv show as scale is a bit rediculous. I mean, megatron was a huge robot, that transformed into a handgun that was held in the hand of others. I think SCALE was pretty much all over the place. Just like Grimmy holding a jet in his jaws. That's a bit rediculous - like Megatron being in gun mode.

in my opinion - i like using the G1 toys as the toy scale. And in that regard - they got it 100% perfect. I have not been disappointed in anything in regards to scale in the MP line.

Heh yeah the show wasn't exactly consistent with scale. :tflaugh

Obviously TakaraTomy is aware that MP01 sticks out as being too big or they wouldn't be giving us MP-10 in the new size (and iGear were aware too, hence their mini MPOP). But yeah TT can never win, I mean MP Hot Rod is great next to MP-01 but his car mode will be way too big next to MP-10's truck mode. Guess it comes down to the individual collector but I personally like to display TFs in bot mode, so the relative size of alt modes doesn't bother me much, as long as the robots line up sensibly next to one another.

Never had a G1 Grimlock (to this day!) so my abiding image of him was always this one:

Great.. so maybe MP-11 can be a redo of Megatron.. and MP-12 thru MP-15 can be all the seekers all over again.. and of course now, all the other primes need to be redone... we need another sleeper.. and black prime.. and ultra mag... Hmmm... wonder if they ocnsidered just starting a "NEW LINE" if all they wanted to do was change the scale. You know, like ending Binaltech for Alternity line???

I always thought the theme of the Masterpiece line was creating a cartoon-accurate alt mode with a respectable robot mode. Hence why Grimlock looks like he does in the cartoon, rather than his G1 toy, or like a real T-Rex. The only exception to the rule seems to be Optimus, who looks much better in bot mode.

It's with this in mind that I would prefer the figures to be in scale with the cartoon, even if it's difficult to determine the exact scale... I think Grimlock should be taller than Prime at least.

I would hope Hasbro will sell him here in the USA too. Why wouldn't they? Optimus Prime always sells!

    Optimus Timelord - 2011-05-12 @ 9:17 am

I don't get this.... in G1 the Prime was bigger than Grimlock. The MP line is almost exactly the same scale of PRIME:Grimlock as G1. Why should Grimlock be the biggest MP of them all???? I think they did it perfectly.

Sorry I should have clarified that, I meant in the cartoon rather than the toyline. The Dinobots were taller even than Prime and Megs (and even in dino mode Grimmy could chew on a seeker jet!).

I have no interest in it - and will now no longer purchase any other Masterpieces that are not new molds. My only regret is buying some of the repaints I have now (ie, sleeper, black prime, etc). Not sure if i'll just keep em since I have them or try to sell them now. But they have definately killed the 'completist' in me with this line.

I'm glad I didn't go for black and sleeper Prime, but I'm really hoping I'll have an MP-02 UM going spare very soon... ;)

Its a pass for me. It looks good, but not so much better that I need to replace my Hasbro version, especially at $275-$300 when its all said and done.

About the scale issues, the cartoon couldn't always get it right but it's generally known that the seekers were the same size as Soundwave and the Autobot Cars. Inferno and Grapple were slightly larger but not by much. Prime and Megatron were taller with Grimlock being taller still. Easy reference would MTMTE 1-3.

I love the realism of the alt mode but not sold on the robot mode. Spike is a nice addition and sitting in the driver's seat. I'll have to decide if I want it in my collection. MP-09 Rodimus despite the QC issues which I haven't experienced except for a right leg panel,it's a very dramatic attempt to combine both aspects of pre and post matrix into 1 figure.
