Mutant Beast Wars

This isn't the first time Hasbro has pulled something out of left field and pasted a Transformers label on it. The Beast Wars Mutants are one such example of their more *interesting* product ideas. There's are different ideas about where the Mutants line really came from. Supposedly, they were originally intended to be part of the unsuccessful Transformers Animorphs series. However they ended up being released as the final wave in the Beast Wars figures line instead.

The Story
According to the packaging the Mutants are a third faction that were created when Megatron's plan to develop an anti-conversion virus went wrong and thus preventing some Fuzors the ability to change into robot mode forced them into a state of dual-beast modes. As described on the packaging:
"The evil Megatron has developed an experimental anti-conversion virus with which he plans to win the Beast Wars! This toxin infects its host and prevents the ability to change into robot mode - eventually causing permanent shutdown. But something went wrong... when unleashed on several Fuzors, it caused a reconfiguration of their conversion abilities, trapping their robot modes inside two different beast modes. Now, bewildered by new and potent extrasensory powers plus the ability to change into two ferocious animals, these Transformers join together to form a renegade band of warriors. This is... Mutant Beast Wars!"
The Mutant Beast Wars Characters

Icebird
Modes: Owl to Polar bear
Function: Mutant Beast Commander
Group : Mutant
Released: June 2000
Motto: " He who fights with monsters should take care lest he become a monster."
Bio: Sage-like leader of the mutants. Very wise and powerful. Possesses colossal size and strength in bear mode - silent aerial abilities in owl mode. Resentful of his lost ability to convert to robot mode. Believes mission is to nullify technology completely and evolve into a purely organic existence. Does not fight with the Maximals, but believes they are a necessary component of the organic evolution. Can communicate telepathically, become invisible, read minds, and shut down machinery at will. Views Optimus Primal's heroics with forgiving tolerance. Greatly feared by Megatron.

Poison Bite
Modes: Scorpion to Barracuda
Function: Special Operations
Group: Mutant
Released: April 2000
Motto: "A strong spark ought to bear calamities and not flee them."
Bio: A silent warrior, Poison Bite is completely loyal to his leader, Icebird. Does not like the mutator mission, but accepts it as a necessary element to a higher vision. Feels abandoned by the Oracle and acts like one whose kind will soon be extinct. Broods on this topic often. Well-liked by his fellow warriors who often feel compelled to console his moments of depression. Extremely dangerous -- can shatter alloys at will. Teleports up to 30 meters at a time in barracuda and scorpion modes. Does not attack Maximals, but will not come to their rescue either.

Razor Claw
Modes: Raptor to Wolverine
Function : Warrior
Group : Mutant
Released: April 2000
Motto: "Greater dooms win greater destinies!"
Bio: Razor Claw's loyalty and self-sacrifice is unmatched by any of the Mutants. Goes into battle with crusader-like enthusiasm; relishes tearing apart Predacons in both dino mode and wolverine mode. Does not care for Maximals, but realizes they are necessary for a total organic existence. Secretly jealous of their ability to convert to robot mode. Tremendous speed as wolverine borders on teleportation; negative ion shield in dino mode makes him impervious to firepower.

Soundwave
Mode: Bat to Alligator
Function : Warrior
Group : Mutant
Released: August 2000
Motto: "From the sky to the sea, they will fear and respect me."
Bio: Soundwave is a welcome ally to the forces. Bat mode makes him ideal for stealth aerial recon missions. Ultra-sensitive internal radar can detect even the slightest disturbances. Alligator jaws penetrate every known alloy. Tail sends seismic circuit-disrupting shockwaves through terra firma. Like his fellow Mutant warriors, Soundwave is dark and brooding; has a tendency to be overly dramatic.
