Transformers 4 Age of Extinction Breaks Records Surpassing $300 Million Worldwide Opening Weekend

The unstoppable Transformers franchise flowed through the box offices this weekend with world wide ticket sales surpassing $300 million.

Even the critics couldn't slow this movie down with Rolling Stone giving the movie zero stars, movie goers turned out in large numbers to see the movie in regular and full IMAX 3D.

The movie did well across the borders with $100 million in sales for North America, followed by the highly targeted China which is reported to have contributed 40% of sales the this weekend's box office.

Get ready for 2016, as this crew will almost surely be back for more.

And without a penny to spare: Paramount Pictures put the three-day box office estimate for "Transformers: Age of Extinction" at exactly $100 million in the U.S. and Canada. It's the largest opening-weekend gross so far this year, though the studio could revise the figure—upward or downward—when actual returns come in on Monday.

Overseas returns for "Age of Extinction," led by a strong showing in China, were $201.3 million. The movie played in 37 territories, with some openings postponed in Europe and Latin America until later this summer to avoid competition from the World Cup.

The fourth installment of the "Transformers" series, "Age of Extinction" had the second-best North American debut of the movie franchise, behind only "Revenge of the Fallen," which collected $108 million in its opening weekend in 2009. "Age of Extinction" cost the Viacom Inc. VIAB +1.10% -owned studio about $210 million to produce.
