Transformers: Bumblebee Not A Reboot According To Producer Who Claims Not To Understand What A Reboot Is

Transformers: Bumblebee had its early preview screening over the past weekend, and met with unusually positive fan response, for a live action Transformers movie. The praise may not be 100% universal, but it seems evident that the moviegoers who have seen it so far like the different take, breath of fresh air, and potential new directions the movie opens up. But what it means for what comes next in the movie franchise is far from decided.

Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura spoke to Slash Film about where the live action movies might go from here, and one thing he wouldn't say was that Bumblebee was the herald of a series reboot. Which may be because he claims to both hate and not understand the concept. But according to him, the next "big" Transformers movie is going to be different from what came before. It's not a far reach to think that if Bumblebee does well at the box office once it goes to full release in just under two weeks, the big decision makers will be more likely to see the value in continuing with Transformers movies shaped by a vision other than Michael Bay's.

Di Bonaventura doesn't seem to be a fan of the concept of Unicron in telling the story of this universe, though he acknowledges that "someday" it will probably figure in. With The Last Knight putting some effort toward establishing Unicron's existence and oncoming threat, and the more recent promise of doing something different from before, it starts to be hard to not read between the lines to see - if not the actual anticipated reboot - a change of narrative course coming, should the "main" series movies pick back up after this.
