Thanks to the Transformers collectors site Robot Points who have share some of the history and mystery behind the Beast Machines / RiD Megabolt Megatron: Concept and the evolution of this very unique figure. Fans of Beast Machines remember the pleasure of finding out about the new Megabolt figure that was announced by Hasbro only the followed by the pain of the cancellation at the end of the series. Luckily, it was subsequently released in the following Rotbots in Disguise series. What a lot of us didn't know was there were two designs on this figure.
There are clear sections, containing hand-coloured paint applications with a secret. More on that in a moment.
The basic idea is the same as the production model (in that they're both transforming head/space crafts), but is essentially a completely different toy. It's actually easier to note the similarities between the two designs. Basic shape and certain areas of transformation are akin, but like the cartoon; does not have the legs. Instead the original jet thrusters adorn the underside of the prototype. Interestingly though, the lower jaw of the production version more closely resembles the cartoon.
