Sneak Peek of Universe Classics 2.0 Wave 1
bwbm - Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Hasbro has just given us a great treat: a sneak peek of the Transformers: Universe Classics 2.0 ultra and deluxe class figures. The provided images are the gray prototypes and include deluxes Sunstreaker, Prowl, and Tankor; and ultras Powerglide and Onslaught with commentary for each figure by the toy line's lead designer Bill Rawyler.

The Transformers: Universe Classics 2.0 line will hit stores in August 2008.

Rawley: For Sunstreaker, the design team sought to create a cool concept sports car that was reminiscent of the character’s G1 form. In robot mode, the team modernized Sunstreaker’s head from G1, but originally weren’t able to achieve the proper fit to allow for the toy’s conversion. A final change to convert part of the “ear” panels allowed the team to capture the look it desired.

Rawley: In robot mode, it was important that Prowl have his shoulder mounted missile launchers, as he did back in G1. The design team also worked with TakaraTomy to create an innovative head reveal as part of the conversion process.

Rawley: This triple-change converts to a robot, airplane and tanker truck. Originally planned as Octane, the team ended up having to change the name to Tankor. Like Prowl, this character also features an exciting head reveal. Painted with all the details, this guy looks like a mean Decepticon ready to blast and cut something to shreds.

Transformers Universe Classic Ultra

Rawley: For Powerglide there were a few important design considerations. First, the design team wanted Powerglide’s head to still have a dome-like point, but in a more updated way. Second, his wings needed to be in his shoulders as they originally were in G1. To stay true to the realistic nature of the Classic Series, the deco will be more silver than red, but with multiple red cues to connect to Powerglide's original look.

Rawley: Bill chose Onslaught because he always loved his design and the two large signature barrels on the character’s back. The design team worked to retain that very characteristic silhouette in this new Ultra scale version of Onslaught. In choosing a vehicle mode, design went with a cool S.W.A.T. Urban assault vehicle to set it apart from the tanks in other Transformers product lines. The vehicle choice and theme lent itself to the creation of a riot shield in robot mode. The final version does an excellent job recalling the G1 characters the design team grew up with.

Wasn't Classics Fireflight (the redeco of Legends Jetfire) originally supposed to be Powerglide? Just get him if you want him tiny.
6:08 pm

He's bigger than the Seekers, and the thing that really bothers me is that he's bigger than Jetfire. The guy who was used as a transport in the original series. And in the original series, Powerglide was only about twice the size of a human. And if you think scale has been proper in the li... read more

To close out Combaticon Awareness week, we look at Onslaught! While there are a couple toys we'll be discussing, the one we're mainly talking about is one that, while not a combiner, deserves not to be forgotten in the way or newer, more Bruticus-ready Onslaughts. Joe Moscone, formerly the PR agent that handled Hasbro's entertainment brands such as Transformers, GI Joe, etc., is auctioning off his collection of figure for charity. For the benefit of Receptions For Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation, Moscone is auctioning off a fairly impressive collection heavy on convention and SDCC exclusives. Most notably for Transformers fans, he's auctioning off the reasonably rare OTFCC Sentinel Maximus figure. Keep reading for more info!
During the long development cycle of Jagex's Transformers universe, a great deal of secondary media was created to support it. One company contracted to do some of that work, Mi, has come forward to reveal their hand in that process, samples of motion comic "episodes" that would have been used to advertise and promote the then-upcoming game. But as the winds shifted on the project, this facet was ultimately shelves. Click through for excerpts of the firm's recollections and a link to the article with the videos.
TFormers forum member TheTfboy wrote a special article for Radio Free Cybertron's Transformersdom blog about his first hand experiences with Jagex's long-developed, short-lived Transformers game. Presented in the format of a timeline of events, TheTfboy explains happenings players observed that may not have been apparent to the rest of us, and shows how long the writing was on the wall for the game's ultimate demise only months after it reached the open beta stage. Keep reading for an excerpt, and then check out the original article!
Jagex's Transformers Universe game has run the course of its short life, but the project had a lot of art designed for it, and the artists that contributed have been posting their work for all to see. We have a range of pieces from Oliver Miles and Sam Beattie including elements that never had a chance to be used in the game. Adam Turnbull has also posted a few video clips to his Vimeo account including function demos and cinematic elements, which we've got embedded below. Click through to check out everything!
