China’s moviegoers and exhibitors alike have been eagerly awaiting the new Transformers installment for 3 years. In that time the country’s number of operating screens has more than doubled, and aggregate national box office has increased by 50 percent. If the trend holds, the new film should easily surpass $400 million in PRC box office revenue, and it even has a realistic chance of passing Stephen Chow’s 2016 hit The Mermaid to become China’s highest grossing film ever.
