Last Stand of The Wreckers does the impossible. It makes me like Verity Carlo.
This is but the first of the miracles I expect from this awesome series. If you haven’t read Writer and Artist Nick Roche’s phenomenal half of the wholly great All Hail Megatron 15 it just came out again in the All Hail Megatron Vol. 4 trade. It’s worth the whole price of the book.
In fact, after this sentence, stop reading this, get up, go to the local comic shop and pick up Last Stand of the Wreckers #1. Don’t bother reading this. Seriously, Wreckers is great and you need to read it. Don’t wait for the trade, go get this issue now, and maybe pick up the trade for good measure anyway. In fact while your out, pick up the AHM Vol. 4 trade and Spotlight Vol. 2 for Spotlight Kup, also by Mr. Roche.
Why? Because Nick Roche is as good as Transformers comics get.
More happens in these 22 pages than in the last 5-6 Transformer comics I’ve read, and it’s seamless. Its full of fan nods but none that would detract from the story for a new reader.
The dialog is fast paced and engaging, but not a word is wasted. Each panel contributes to the forward momentum of the story or to our understanding of the characters. Despite nearly a dozen introductions, every character present feels real and established characters are portrayed with respect and consistency. No background color cameos. Everyone is here for a reason.
Roche’s art is right on the money, capturing the essence of the Transformers and giving them expressive, accessible designs. The action is fluid and exhilarating. Worthy of the kind of battles you’d expect from a comic with “Wreckers” on the cover.
What are you still reading this for? Seriously. Go buy this comic.
